Caprice Holdings sees the Light at Selfridges London
The Art Deco style brasserie will open as part of the final chapter of the famous department store’s £300m investment and will feature London’s largest scale artwork by Damien Hirst.
The brasserie and bar is described as serving ‘an eclectic mix of classic British and internationally-inspired dishes’ with the kitchen headed up by Portuguese chef Emanuel Machado, formerly of Balthazar. Dishes on the a la carte menu will include the likes of scallops with red peppers, roasted fennel and capers; spaghetti with lobster; and Pegasus pie served with a yuzu coconut cloud.
A weekend brunch menu will include avocado and poached eggs, given an edge with ancient grains, turmeric, coconut and garlic hollandaise, and it will also serve a champagne afternoon tea.
With design consulted on by architect Martin Brudnizki, the dining room will have a central bar and private dining room. The centrepiece of the restaurant will be Pegasus, a 24ft crystal encrusted statue with a 30ft wingspan by Hirst.
“When you think of the Capital City of the World you think of London. When you think of London you think of Selfridges. In the future when you think of London restaurants I hope you will think of Brasserie of Light,” says Caprice Holdings owner Richard Caring.
“The Brasserie of Light is a new look spectacle where the input of Damien Hirst, Martin Brudnizki and the absolute strength of Selfridges; this mix has resulted in what I believe to be something very beautiful. It is about light, make-believe and dreams. Dreams in this restaurant will come true.”
“I love the myth of the Pegasus and this is such an exciting project and I love the scale of it. I hope it’s going to look like something beautiful from another world,” says Hirst.
Brasserie of Light will join other restaurants in the London department store, including Aubaine, Tonkotsu, Alto by San Carlo, The Brass Rail, Yo! Sushi and Hemsley + Hemsley as well as Ping Pan Asian, which was launched last month by MasterChef winner Ping Coombes.
