Monty's Deli to launch crowdfund campaign to finance expansion
The restaurant has chosen to use investment crowdfunding platform Crowdcube to raise £150,000, having previously financed the opening of its first bricks-and-mortar site through a Kickstarter campaign.
Founders Mark Ogus and Owen Barratt will launch the campaign on Friday 27 July, aiming to meet the target within a month.
The funds will be used to expand the two-outlet operation to a number of sites at new indoor food markets across London and the UK.
Currently, Monty’s operates a restaurant on east London’s Hoxton Street, as well as trading at a site in the Kitchens development in Old Spitalfields Market.
Inspired by Jewish delis in the UK, the restaurant specialises in kosher-style soul food. Breads, mustards, meats and pastries are all made onsite, and used in the likes of salt beef reuben sandwiches; chopped liver with toasted challah; cured brisket with house mustard; and a platter of cured fish including mackerel and trout, salmon and herring.
“We call this ‘Jewish soul food’ because, in essence, soul food is all about roots. It’s restorative, comforting food. And you feel part of a tradition when you’re eating it,” says Ogus.
“We have spent years perfecting recipes, and we now have a year under our belts as restaurateurs. The stage is set for us to roll out Monty’s Deli across London.”
In October 2016, Monty’s launched its first public crowdfunding bid for £50,000, reaching one fifth of its target within 48 hours. By the November deadline it exceeded the target, raising £52,086 from 789 backers.
