Almost half (44 per cent) of European travellers feel that hotels don’t currently provide enough information on their environmental practices, a TripAdvisor survey has found.

The survey also foundthat though just 9 per cent of European travellers have chosen to stay at a particular hotel for their green policies, a quarter (26 per cent) ‘actively made eco-friendly travel choices’ in the last 12 months, and 33 per cent plan to do so in the next year.

The results come as TripAdvisor announced the launch of its GreenLeaders programme across Europe, after expanding it from the US to 19 other markets including the UK in March this year.

John Alker, director of policy and communications at UK Green Building Council, said:

“For the hotel and leisure sector, going green is not only the right thing to do, it’s just good business. Green should be viewed as another aspect of quality. The GreenLeaders programme will help consumers – and indeed investors – understand who is taking this seriously.”

Created in collaboration with the Carbon Trust, the UK Green Building Council, the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Tourism Partnership, the programme gives GreenLeaders status to venues that have green practices in place.

Ranked ‘bronze’, ‘silver’, ‘gold’ or ‘platinum’, eco-friendly hotels are assessed on a list of practices including linen and towel re-use, recycling and composting through to solar panels, electric car charging stations and green roofing.

GreenLeaders launched in the US in April 2013, and over 6,000 properties around the world have so far been awarded status.
