“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend David Coffer, after an inimitably strong battle with illness,” the statement read.

“A man of profound insight and intellect, lionlike determination and courage, and unrivalled kindness; he could not fail to have an impact on anyone who met him.

“A supernova, his brightness will shine for decades on the many people whose life he influenced. We have received so many kind messages and would like to thank all well-wishers for their support as we come to terms with our loss.”

Coffer began his career as a retail agent and set up Davis Coffer Associates with partner Lewis Davis in 1971. The pair were later joined by Anthony Lyons and the business went on to operate as Davis Coffer Lyons, which Coffer served as chair of until his death

Elsewhere, he also created the Restaurant Property Advisors Society in 1992 and later established advisory firm Coffer Corporate Leisure in the early 2000s.

Peter Martin, contributing editor at MCA, Restaurant's sister site, shared a tribute to Coffer on LinkedIn.

He wrote: “Really sad to learn of the death of David Coffer - one of hospitality’s great characters. He was one of life’s enthusiasts, shrewd businessman, sector champion, generous host, brilliant raconteur – and most of all great friend and supporter.

“Dubbed ‘Mr Leisure’ by the property world, he built Davis Coffer Lyons into the most influential property agency in restaurants, especially in London.

“We will all remember his famous dinners, his bad jokes and how many recessions he’d seen.

“Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues. David Coffer was a true legend.”

Coffer is survived by his wife Ruth and his children, Adam, Daniel, and Lisa.
