Josh Katz to bring Carmel to Fitzrovia
Seating 95, the second iteration of Carmel will be located just off Oxford Street on Market Place within the site that was once home to MJMK’d short-lived Cuban restaurant La Rampa.
Katz and his executive chef Jeremy Borrow have created an ‘extensive menu’ of small plates and sharing dishes that ‘delve deeper into the abundance of produce and spices across the Eastern Mediterranean’.
Dishes will include monkfish crudo with sheep’s yoghurt and tomatoes; hanger steak with bone marrow, burnt onion and sour cherry molasses reduction; flatbread topped with cod’s roe with potato, rosemary, spring onion and bottarga; and tahini and honey tart with fir tree honey and black sesame.
Fresh pasta will also be a focal point, with options set to include seafood pappardelle with mussels, squid, hake and saffron; and ricotta agnolotti with confit tomato, wild oregano and lemon butter.
Early morning and brunch options, meanwhile, will include freshly baked pastries alongside heartier plates such as green eggs and amba (two fried eggs with wilted greens, amba butter and verjus-pickled shallots); eggs Levantine with za’atar hollandaise, gravadlax and spinach; and steak and egg sandwich, served with green tahini and pickled red onion.
Carmel Fitzrovia has been designed in collaboration with Mata Architects to ‘reflect a minimalist approach’ with rich timber and blackened steel running throughout the restaurant.
Upon entering, guests will be greeted by the open kitchen to the right. Moving further into the restaurant, banquette seating will make up the rest of the space before reaching the Green Room, an intimate space seating 30 with greenery and its own bar.
“Carmel in Queen’s Park has become such a cherished, local favourite and we wanted to bring the sense of this to central London,” says Katz, who runs the business with his brother Paul and Mattia Bianchi.
“The menu will continue to focus on the Eastern Mediterranean cuisine which I love, but with a bigger kitchen and space, we can explore more with our menu. Mattia has done what he does best and will create an incredible wine list, highlighting some of The Med’s most exciting, lesser-known wine producers.”
Katz’s debut restaurant Berber & Q Grill House launched in a former taxi repair shop in Haggerston in 2015 and was followed by Exmouth Market Berber and Q Shawarma Bar in 2016 and Carmel Queen's Park in 2021.
