According to research conducted by Direct Line, the ultimate bacon butty recipe involves smoked bacon, untoasted sliced white bread and brown sauce.
The survey of over 1,000 adults revealed that far from craving a baguette (5 per cent) or wholesome brown bread (6 per cent), the majority of Brits (25 per cent) believe sliced white bread is the best choice for a bacon butty.
Additionally, over half (58 per cent) would leave their bread untoasted, with just 21 per cent believing toasted or warmed bread is best for a butty.
There was a clear East-West divide when it came to condiments, with the East of England and the Welsh opting for tomato ketchup and the East of England going for a brown sauce. However, brown sauce came out on top nationally after winning over Scotland.
Although the majority of Brits said they prefer their butties with just bacon and sauce, eggs were the clear favourite when it came to additional ingredients. Over a quarter (31 per cent) said they would choose an egg if they were going to change their butty up, with 14 per cent opting for cheese.
More unusual options including added lightly fried banana and avocado.
Jazz Gakhal, head of direct line for Business said: “The nation has spoken and declared their preferred bacon butty recipe. The humble butty inspires passion and debate, and there are those that will always claim bacon needs ketchup, but brown sauce is the collective favourite.”
