Tesco has opened a Giraffe restaurant at its flagship Extra store in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and will open two more in its Extra stores before the end of the year.

The supermarket giant plans to open Giraffe restaurants at its Abingdon, Oxfordshire, store on 2 December, and in Twickenham, west London, a week later. Tesco bought the 50-strong family-orientated restaurant chain for £48.6m in March.

Giraffe’s first Tesco site opened in Watford, Hertfordshire, during the summer. It is part of a wider strategy to open 10 restaurants within Tesco stores over a 12-month period.

Giraffe managing director and co-founder Russel Joffe said the Watford site had been a huge success.

He explained: “The site has been performing above expectations at every level and we hope that these new openings will follow suit.”

The brand’s signature ‘Good Morning Brekkie (£5 for breakfast and a hot drink), ‘Lunch for Less’ (£6.25 for a main course), ‘Feel Good’ dinner (£9.95 for two courses) and other deals will all be available at the new sites.

New openings

  • With 192-covers across its outside and indoor spaces, Giraffe’s Cheshunt restaurant is flanked by a 10-foot-tall giraffe. It is accessible via its own entrance, as well as via the store.
  • Situated in a renovated corner of the red-brick Tesco Extra, the 134-cover Abingdon site features leather booths, a bi-fold opening frontage and a monochrome floor.
  • The 121-cover Giraffe in Twickenham is located at the front of the Tesco Extra, with the main entrance opening to the car park. Mute tones, barewood, glass and planting complete the look.
