Chef, restaurateur and food writer Mark Hix is doubling up on the success of Tramshed, having acquired the now-defunct Sushinho site in London’s Devonshire Square to open another restaurant under the chicken and steak concept.

Opening in November, the 5,000 sq.ft, 100-cover restaurant will offer the same chicken and steak-focused menu that has been so well-received at Tramshed in Shoreditch, which opened 16 months ago.

The as-yet-unnamed venue will also be home to a second Mark’s Bar in the basement, offering a similar cocktail menu and food experience to that of the Soho outpost and benefitting from a 2.30am license.

“This is a hugely exciting acquisition for us,” said Hix. “We’ve been looking to open a site in the City for some time and this site meets our criteria on many levels, not least because it has a great basement where I can open our second cocktail bar which we are very fond of in Soho.

“The City has changed since I worked in my first head chefs job at Mr Pontac’s 25 years ago - restaurants were few and far between and top hats were fading out.”

Video interview: Mark Hix

In this exclusive video interview for BigHospitality last year, Hix talked about the long road to developing his simple chicken and steak concept.

Diners at the new restaurant will be able to can opt for a whole Swainson House Farm roast chicken for two or three to share for £25; a 250g or 500g Glenarm mighty-marbled steak at £20 and £40; a 1kg porterhouse at £69; or kilo rib steaks coming in multiples of 250g. All are served with chips and Bearnaise sauce along with the option of starters and desserts.

The growing portfolio of Hix’s business, Restaurants Etc, also includes Hix Oyster & Chop House, Hix Oyster & fish House, Hix Soho, Hix at Selfridges, Hix Mayfair and Tramshed Shoreditch.

Speaking of this latest deal, Hix’s business partner and finance director of the group Ratnesh Bagdai said: “Commercially, it simply made sense and the timing of such fits in line with our measured growth plan.

“Whilst we will continue to seek further city locations, I very much look forward to this pre-Christmas Devonshire Square project.”

Sushinho in administration

Meanwhile, Sushinho City Ltd, the company behind the eponymous Japanese/Brazilian fusion restaurant that occupied the site in Devonshire Square, has been placed into administration.

Our sister title, M&C Report, understands that Augusta Kent Limited has been appointed as administrators to the company, which opened the second site under the brand in February in the City.

The group’s other site in King’s Road, which opened in 2008, is operated under a separate company and not thought to be affected by the administration process.

The new Hix chicken and steak restaurant will open at 9a Devonshire Square, Bishopsgate, in November.
