London-based Japanese restaurant group Taro has launched sites in Brentwood and Catford bringing its total number of sites to eight.

Taro Brentwood is the brand’s first site outside London and has a number of special dishes exclusive to the restaurant including TanTan Ramen - a creamy tantan ramen with a Japanese take on the famous Sichuan noodle dish with a nutty sesame broth, with spicy ground minced pork cooked in miso, topped with menma bamboo, nitamago, pakchoi, spring onion, red ginger and nori.

Taro Catford, meanwhile, served bottled cocktails from local Catford business Bottle. Options include lychee martini made with fresh lychee juice, coconut syrup and lime.

Dishes that feature on all of Taro’s menus include grilled chicken or prawn gyoza; takoyoki (deep-fried octopus balls with Japanese tonkatsu sauce); fresh sushi, sashimi; salads; ramen, udon noodles and rice dishes.

“I’m thrilled to add two further sites to our portfolio this summer with the opening of Catford in south east London and our first opening outside of London in Brentwood, Essex,” says Mr Taro. “It’s wonderful to be able to reach new diners outside of central London who share my passion for authentic homemade Japanese food.”

Taro is a ‘taishushokudo’ in Japanese meaning ‘an everyday dining room’. The group was founded by Mr. Taro who visited London for the first time in 1979 and ‘dreamt of making Japanese food popular by bringing authentic Japanese cuisine and culture to the city of London’.

Mr Taro launched his first Taro site on Soho’s Brewer Street in 1999 and now has plans to expand across the UK.
