Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Benares has reopened following a major refurbishment.

In what is described as new chapter for the Mayfair restaurant, which first opened its doors back in 2003, the restaurant’s interior has been updated, including a new-look entrance and reception area.

Taking inspiration from the holy Indian city of Varanasi, colloquially known as Benares, the renovation includes a dramatic candle wall and a reimagined bar area.

The main dining room, meanwhile, has benefited from the addition of more colour and texture and features ornate ceiling artwork and intricate backlit jali panels on the walls throughout.

To coincide the restaurant’s new design, executive chef Sameer Taneja has created a new menu that includes dishes such as dum ka truffle shorba - a winter truffle and rabbit stew; vindaloo with oysters; Goan sausage served with sanna – a steamed coconut and rice bun; and rasmalai infused with rose, cardamom and vanilla.

A classics section of the menu also brings back beloved dishes and traditional curries, such as kukkad; makhani; and meat korma.

“This marks an exciting new chapter for Benares,” says Taneja.

“The refurbishment embodies our ambition to craft a space that mirrors the vibrancy and creativity of our cuisine. The new menu is a celebration of the finest British seasonal ingredients, enriched with bold flavours and techniques, offering a fresh take on modern Indian dining.

“I’m excited to welcome guests to experience the energy, innovation, and passion that define this next step for Benares.”

Benares is one of a number of restaurants in the capital to have reopened after an interior refresh. Spitalfields Thai restaurant Som Saa has reopened after having been closed for a month with a new look, refurbished toilets, additional furniture, and improvements made to its kitchen and back-of-house areas.

Next month Borough Market fish restaurant Applebee’s relaunches with a new look that will include a fresh fish counter, open kitchen with counter seating overlooking a live-fire grill, and a new outdoor area to mark its 25th birthday.
