Liverpool tapas restaurant El Gato Negro is to move from its current home on Exchange Flags to a new location on Castle Street this spring.

The restaurant, which has occupied the Exchange Flags location in the city since 2019, is taking over the site that is currently home to South American restaurant Viva Brazil.

The relocation is scheduled for March, with the current El Gato Negro site at Exchange Flags trading as usual until then.

Additionally, the site at Exchange Flags will be turned into a new venue later in the year by MHDL, the restaurant group behind El Gato Negro.

“We’re delighted to be moving El Gato Negro to its new home on Castle Street and making way for something exciting to come in its place at Exchange Flags,” says Simon Shaw, chef patron and creative director at MHDL.

“This relocation allows us to bring El Gato Negro to one of Liverpool’s most iconic streets, while also paving the way for a dynamic new venue later in the year.”

All current Viva Brazil staff will be retained as part of the move.

MHDL runs two El Gato Negro restaurants, the original of which was established in Manchester by Shaw in 2016.

Last year MHDL converted its El Gato Negro restaurant on Leeds’ Park Row to a Black Cat Club, becoming the second bar and competitive socialising site in its portfolio.
