The restaurateur behind Covent Garden Asian restaurant Gura Gura will launch an Indian restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue next month.

Oorja will be the second London restaurant project for Gobind Chona’s Starwins Group, which made its debut in the capital in late 2022 with the launch of Gura Gura in Covent Garden’s The Yards development.

Within a former office space just off Cambridge Circus , the new restaurant will be open all through the day with a breakfast menu inspired that includes egg burji on toast; vegan dalia porridge; and the Oorja sawera kebab platter with chicken tikka and lamb kebab with saffron rice, grilled tomato and fried egg.

Dishes available later in the day will include Indian-style fire spatchcock chicken marinated in BBQ sauce, fenugreek and cream cheese served with mint chutney onion; railway curry of lamb leg with aromatic black cardamon, mace and onion-base sauce; and chickpeas masala made with overnight tea-soaked Kabuli chickpeas cooked with dry mango, pomegranate and onion gravy.

The restaurant will also offer a ‘bespoke’ chef-curated menu.

The two-floor restaurant will seat 105 covers in total with design details including terracotta panelling and beige furnishings.

“We are extremely excited to introduce Oorja to London’s exciting food scene,” Chona says.

“Oorja symbolises a journey through the diverse flavours and landscapes of India.”

Born in India to a father that was also in the restaurant business, Chona studied for a diploma in hospitality at Les Roches before working in Tokyo.

In 2017 he returned to India to launch his debut restaurant project, Tippling Street.
