Pub and restaurant group Longbow Bars & Restaurants has filed plans to transform the former Royal Bank of Scotland building in Bakwell into a restaurant.

The plans, which have now entered the public consultation phase, are to bring the Grade II listed building back to life in the form of a premium restaurant that serves a menu designed to showcase the local area’s people and produce.

The brasserie style restaurant would operate seven days per week, serving breakfast, lunch and a brasserie style dinner menu as well as afternoon tea.

The menu would be designed by Raymond Blanc trained executive chef Adrian Gagea, who oversees the food offer across the group.

“I grew up in Bakewell so reviving the bank, and turning it into a place that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, would feel like coming home,” says Rob Hattersley, Longbow founder and managing director.

“It also feels right to be rescuing such an iconic building, and investing in the local economy. It’s a principle that drives all of my business decisions.”

“My hospitality career started in Bakewell when I was 14 years old, working at my family’s restaurant, Aitch’s Wine Bar and Bistro. Since that was sold 20 years ago, many people have said that there has been a gap.

“We have plenty of great cafes and traditional pubs but there is definitely room for a spacious, premium restaurant offering exceptional locally inspired dishes.”

Longbow Bars & Restaurants is located within the Peak District and currently operates three venues; wedding venue, bar, restaurant and hotel The Maynard; The George Hathersage, a bar, restaurant and boutique hotel; and The Ashford Arms in Ashford-in-the-Water, following a £1.6m refurbishment in collaboration with Heineken.

The public consultation phase will run until 2 September.
