The number of covers at the neighbourhood restaurant, which is located in Harborne, will increase by 25 as a result of the extension. The work will include the addition of a bar that will accommodate up to four covers for walk-ins and table top style dining, alongside space for a further 15 covers in the dining room.
The outdoor terrace will also offer six more covers.
The move will also double the size of kitchen, enabling the restaurant to extend it opening hours and offer lunch on Thursdays and Fridays and allowing for new kitchen equipment
Tropea is the creation of Ben Robinson Young and Kasia Piatkowska, who met while studying Culinary Arts at the University College Birmingham in 2010. Inspired by a picturesque town on the Calabrian coast, Tropea’s menu is heavily influenced by food sold on the streets of Italy, with much of the produce sourced from there.
House-made gelato, more interesting types of cured meat, and pasta shapes such as mafalde will feature on the menu when the restaurant re-opens, according to the restaurant, and the antipasti section of the menu will also be enhanced to accommodate casual diners.
“Tropea is a true neighbourhood restaurant, and we’re determined to never change that," say the pair.
"The extension will feature a bar so we can offer our guests a casual glass of wine or cocktail alongside counter style dining.
"The increased covers in the restaurant will mean we can reserve daily tables for our regulars and offer walk-ins whilst maintaining that cosy, intimate feel that Tropea is synonymous with.”
Tropea was named the Best Local Restaurant: Central & East of England in the Good Food Guide’s Neighbourhood Restaurant of the Year Awards 2023.
