Danish Japanese restaurant group Sticks’n’Sushi will open its 14th UK location this September.

Its new restaurant, in Islington, will marks the brand’s first venture into north London and is part of Sticks’n’Sushi’s growth strategy to extend its reach into London’s residential neighbourhoods, following the opening of a restaurant in Richmond in May.

The new 120-cover, double-fronted, 3,500sq ft restaurant is made up of two single-storey buildings, which collectively come together to create an open dining room.

The space features a large open plan dining room, kitchen counter, lounge and bar, along with outdoor seating.

For the interior the brand’s longstanding Berlin-based designers Diener & Diener have once again embraced Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian elegance, whilst also reflecting the storytelling of the residential address with a timber and glass façade, abstract pendant lighting, natural furnishings, and tones of yellow and muted greys.

“We’re delighted to be bringing Sticks’n’Sushi and our exceptional guest experience to north London this September, creating 50 jobs locally for existing and new fishes to join the Sticks’n’Sushi family," says Andreas Karlsson, Sticks’n’Sushi Group CEO.

"Islington’s Upper Street is a prime location and bustling dining destination, a perfect addition for our energetic and contemporary brand. We look forward to welcoming the local community as well as attracting those from the nearby neighbourhoods of Hampstead, Belsize Park and Highgate.”

Sticks’n’Sushi recently secured a £22m loan from digital bank OakNorth to support its future growth in the UK. The Japanese premium restaurant group was acquired by specialist investor McWin Capital Partners in January in a deal that valued the business at €80m (£68m).

Originating in Copenhagen, Sticks’n’Sushi was founded by half-Danish, half-Japanese brothers Jens and Kim Rahbeck and Thor Anderson in 1994. It opened its first restaurant in the UK in Wimbledon in 2012 and now operates an estate that comprises 28 restaurants across Copenhagen, Berlin and the UK.
