Latest opening: CDMX Tacos

London has welcomed a new taqueria promising to bring the vibe of Mexico City to the capital.

What: A grab-and-go taqueria located just off Soho’s Brewer Street that is inspired by the taco culture of Mexico City.

Who: CDMX is the brainchild of Billy Sengupta, who recently moved back to London from Mexico City, where he was global head of luxury tequila at Diageo. Before that he was global manager for Bulleit Bourbon, based in New York, and European senior brand manager for Bailey’s in London, and it’s a fair assumption that he has a good grasp of the food scene of each of these major cities.

The food: Sengupta says his aim is to bring “the most authentic” tacos found in Mexico City to London and has kept things simple in order to make good on his ambitions. CDMX serves just four taco options - al pastor (marinated pork); chicharron (crispy pork belly), asada (grilled beef); and nopal (grilled cactus), each priced at £4.25, and the same selection in quesadilla form for one pound extra. Its sides game is equally as concise, with a choice of chips with guac or salsa and potatoes with crema. For those looking for additional spice, there are two different salsas on offer at the counter, which customers can help themselves to, as well as some lime segments.

To drink: You’ll find three Mexican beers on offer - Victoria (which lays claims to being Mexico’s oldest lager), Dos Equis and Modello - as well as popular Mexican brand Jarritos, which has been one of the country’s most beloved soft drinks brands since its launch almost 75 years ago in 1950.

The vibe: Sengupta has adopted the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) approach with a pared back, utilitarian design. Seemingly inspired by the colours of Coca-Cola (the soft drink brand’s logo is a prominent part of interior signage) the space is decked out in white tiles and red writing with a counter to the rear at which orders are taken and behind which the tacos are prepared. CDMX has been designed as a grab-and-go offer with tacos served on paper plates, although there is a small amount of space to stand and eat at should you wish. Expect to queue at peak times.

And another thing: Don’t be surprised if you find (outgoing?) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak jostling for space in the taco queue. CDMX is one of the few restaurants that serves Mexican Coke, of which Sunak is a massive fan. The self-confessed ‘Coke addict’ says the Mexican version of the drink is the best, which is made with cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup.
