Simon Rimmer has closed his Didsbury restaurant Greens with immediate effect after 33 years.

Making the announcement on social media, the TV chef said the decision had come after the landlord increased the rent by around 35% and that the rising cost of food, materials, heating, lighting and power and employing people had also played a part and had led to the business becoming ‘unviable’.

“It’s a heart breaking day,” says Rimmer.

“I’d like to thank every single member of staff that’s worked with us over the years, ever single customer who has come through the doors, our amazing suppliers, our neighbours, friends and anybody who has ever set food inside the door.”

Rimmer and business partner Simon Connolly opened Greens in West Didsbury, Manchester, in 1990. It became known for its interesting and ambitious vegetarian menus and had become a restaurant institution in the area.

A second Greens opened on Sale’s Stanley Square in the summer of 2022 and will continue to operate.

“We will hopefully see you in Sale,” Rimmer adds.
