The chef had planned to expand into the site next door to create a new bar area and 12-cover private dining room as well as additional seating in the upstairs dining room. The move would have doubled the size of the kitchen and see the restaurant increase from 16 to 26 covers. However, in an Instagram post the chef says that the plans will now no longer go ahead.
“We are unfortunately unable to extend and refurbish the restaurant as originally planned,” he wrote. “We will be staying in the existing restaurant for the foreseeable future with a different concept.”
“We apologise for any disappointment but no one is more disappointed than us.”
In a U-turn on capacity, instead of expanding the number of covers the restaurant will now reduce them from 16 to just 10, which Treadwell says will allow “a better experience and the table for the entire night”.
Treadwell announced the expansion plans in October last year saying the move would allow guests to be able to have their table for the entire evening. Diners would also for the first time have been able to visit the bar for drinks and bar snacks without a table booking.
“My aim has always been to bring my electric take on food to as many people as possible, and it is important that this continues,” he said at the time. “Our menu represents amazing value and our location on the Digbeth Estate means we are in the midst of a great mix of retail, residential and creative businesses. We can’t wait to welcome people into the new space and to introduce 670 Grams to an even bigger audience.”
670 Grams opened on Gibb Street within the Digbeth Estate in August 2020 and takes its name from the weight of Treadwell’s daughter when she was born four months prematurely.
