Bar and club operator REKOM has taken on the former Yard Bar site on St Mary’s Street, which will receive a £1.2m investment before reopening as the new venue in November.
A second Proud Mary is also due to open in the country early next year in Swansea, located on the former Idols club on Wind Street.
Spanning floors, the 950-capacity Cardiff ‘party pub’ is described as having the ‘fun and festive atmosphere of a German bier hall’. It will open until 2am Sunday to Thursday and 3am Friday and Saturday and will serve two draught ales from Cardiff brewery Tiny Rebel.
Food will include traditional bar snacks and a range of pizzas and burgers.
It will have 12 TV screens showing live sport and local bands will be given a platform to perform with on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Welsh capital was also REKOM’s choice of location for the first UK-based Heidi’s Bier Bar, which opened in March this year.
“We are delighted to continue investing in Cardiff, which is such a vibrant and exciting city,” says REKOM’s regional director Graeme Da Silva.
“Heidi’s has exceeded all expectations and PRYZM continues to be one of our most successful clubs, so we are confident Proud Mary Pub will prove to be a similar hit.”
There are currently six Proud Mary Pubs in Denmark, Finland and Norway, with Cardiff being the first in the UK.
REKOM operates more 200 bars, pubs and clubs internationally and 48 in the UK. In addition to Proud Mary its other venues in Wales include PRYZM, Heidi’s Bier Bar and Steinbeck & Shaw in Cardiff, ATIK in Wrexham and Fiction Swansea.
