Chaophraya and Thaikhun operator Thai Leisure Group is investing £1m into a refurbishment project that will see at least five of its 16 restaurants overhauled.

The improvements will be delivered by contractor JMDA before Christmas, with key changes including redesigning and modernising the front of house and entrances, as well as the dining and bar areas of several key restaurants.

Thai Leisure Group managing director Ian Leigh says that the investment is being delivered in order to allow the brand to meet the needs of its existing customers, as well as to support its ambitious growth plans.

“At Thai Leisure Group, we pride ourselves on constantly innovating and developing our offering, which is why we’ve remained the UK’s biggest Thai restaurant chain. This significant investment will elevate the dining experience even further for guests, allowing customers to enjoy a greater range of Thai cuisine in a comfortable and aesthetic environment.”

The group also says that it plans to refurbish each of its six Chaophraya locations over the next three years.

Thai Leisure Group recently extended its portfolio with its first Thaikhun street food buffet restaurant, Thaikhun Buffet, located in The Trafford Centre, Manchester.

The brand says it also has plans to open more Chaophraya sites in the next five years.

The pandemic saw Thai Leisure Group - which was founded in 2004 by Khun Kim and Martin Stead -  jettison a number of under-performing sites as it went through two Company Voluntary Arrangements (CVAs) in a 12-month period.

The couple ventured into the restaurant world after Kim travelled to the UK from Bangkok, where she had been serving authentic Thai dishes on the city’s famed Khoa San Road since the age of 15.
