The group, which is owned and operated by husband and wife team Alex Peffly and Z He and has a flagship restaurant in Chinatown, will pay homage to Cantonese Dai Pai Dong food stalls with its new site, drawing inspiration from He's childhood memories and favourite comfort foods.
Bun House specialises in Chinese-style bao that, unlike the Taiwanese buns popularised by the likes of JKS's Bao and Bone Daddies sister brand Flesh & Buns, are served closed with the filling inside.
The Hawley Wharf menu will feature a selection of signature buns, alongside a range of new snacks and larger sharing plates.
They include crispy shiitake nuggets with house ranch dip; Shanghai-style cold noodles with sesame chilli sauce; and slow-cooked satay beef stew served with rice or glass noodles.
There will also be dessert options including a new dish of bitesize Hong Kong french toast doused in a Cantonese coconut kaya butter; and Bun House's signature custard bun made with salted egg yolk and coconut milk.
A range of Hong Kong iced milk tea’s and Asian craft beers will make up the bulk of the drinks offering.
“I’m so excited that Bun House has arrived in Camden Market’s Hawley Wharf,” says He.
“I’ve had so much fun playing around with this new menu, which puts a playful Cantonese spin on some of my favourite ‘guilty pleasures’ and comfort food in the UK.”
He and Peffly established their original flagship Bun House restaurant on Greek Street in Soho in early 2017.
However, the size of the Soho site meant it had a limited production capacity, leading the pair to move the operation to a larger location on Lisle Street in Chinatown at the beginning of 2019.
Later that year they converted the Greek Street site into Wun's Tea Room & Bar; a Hong Kong-style concept partly inspired by He’s upbringing.
The pair also operate Chinese crépe brand Pleasant Lady, which has locations in Spitalfields and Soho.
