Roti King, which is run by chef Sugen Gopal, is set to launch what will be its second permanent restaurant this spring in Circus West Village, the riverside neighbourhood that forms part of Battersea Power Station's multi-billion pound regeneration project.
Known for its authentic roti canai, a paratha-like flatbread that is made fresh every day by hand and served with curry, Roti King opened its first restaurant in Euston in 2014.
“There is nowhere in the UK that makes roti canai the way we do at Roti King,” says Gopal.
“Our attention to detail, fresh British ingredients and a few secret techniques makes this the most authentic place to eat roti in the UK. I am beyond thrilled to see my cuisine and heritage becoming so popular in the UK, this opening at Battersea Power Station represents the start of a very exciting period for Roti King.”
The Battersea restaurant will feature a host of new dishes added to the menu, with a focus on more vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. They include a vegan roti canai, which Gopal is currently developing.
There will also be 'signatures' from the Euston menu including beef rendang; laksa; and nasi goreng, a dish of stir-fried rice with eggs, seafood and chicken.
While the original Euston restaurant accepts no bookings, with guests often having to queue 45 minutes for a table, Roti King Battersea will allow guests to book; although half the seating will be left for walk-ins.
The restaurant will feature a 'stripped back aesthetic', and offer takeaway and delivery alongside eat in dining.
“Battersea Power Station is emerging as one of the most unique and exciting retail, leisure, food and drink destinations in the capital,” says Sam Cotton, head of leasing at Battersea Power Station Development Company.
“We are delighted that Roti King has recognised this and decided to open its first restaurant in south London here. With the development’s strong links to Malaysia through our shareholders, we are thrilled to bring delicious Malaysian cuisine to the vibrant riverside neighbourhood that has been created at Battersea Power station for all to enjoy.”
'Biggest year yet' for Battersea Power Station
This year is being billed as the 'biggest one yet' in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station, with the Grade II listed building's historic Turbine Halls and Boiler House set to open from September, with Le Bab taking up residence alongside other operators including vegan concept Clean Kitchen Club; Where The Pancakes Are; Italian poke chain Poke House; and Joe & The Juice.
Following the opening of Street Pizza in Circus West Village last year, Gordon Ramsay will also be opening a Bread Street Kitchen & Bar within the Power Station.
Elsewhere, the Boiler House will additionally hold a 20,000 sq ft food hall offering an all-day dining experience, more details on which will be announced in the coming months; while State of Play Hospitality’s competitive socialising ping pong concept Bounce will launch its first venue in seven years within Turbine Hall B.
“Housing one of our places in such an iconic, inspirational piece of architecture is a bit of a dream and we feel really lucky to be a part of the Battersea Power Station story,” says Stephen Tozer, co-founder of Le Bab.
“The Power Station and surrounding area feels like the biggest regeneration project that’s happened in the last decade that I’ve lived in London. I’ve actually been a neighbour to the Power Station for years and so I know first-hand just how huge this is going to be for this part of the capital.
“Seeing it all evolve and develop from the inside has been an incredible journey.”
