Coming ahead of the presentation of the Michelin Guide 2022 next week, restaurants including Russell Norman’s Clerkenwell trattoria Brutto, Manteca in Shoreditch, and Sargasso in Margate, Kent, were among those to receive a Bib, which is awarded to restaurants 'offering particularly good quality, good value cooking'.
In total, 122 Bib Gourmand restaurants feature in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2022. Among the 16 new entries, three were already recommended in the Guide while 13 are brand new additions for 2022.
Other London restaurants to have been awarded a Bib include Angelo Sato's Humble Chicken; Indian restaurant Pahli Hill; and Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, which launched last year on the former Darjeeling Express site in Soho.
Outside of the capital, restaurants in England to be given a Bib in this year's Guide include 'on-trend' bistro Andria in Dartmouth, Devon; Burnt Orange in Brighton, East Sussex; and Kintsu in Colchester, Essex, which Michelin describes as featuring 'original tasting plates with some interesting plant-based choices'.
There were also two pubs in England to receive a Bib Gourmand: Sculthorpe Mill in Sculthorpe, Norfolk, and The Hollist Arms in Lodsworth, West Sussex.
In the Republic of Ireland, family-owned Cush in Ballycotton was awarded a Bib Gourmand, alongside artisan bakery, restaurant and wine bar Éan in Galway; and Everett’s in Waterford.
Meanwhile, in Scotland, Ka Pao and Celentano's, both based in Glasgow, also received a Bib.
No new Bib Gourmands were awarded to restaurants in Wales or Northern Ireland.
“Bib Gourmands are an important part of our selection and are particularly popular with our readers and users, who are always on the lookout for wonderful food at great prices,” says Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides.
“All these restaurants are to be congratulated for what they have achieved in these very challenging times.”
Based on the number of restaurants to hold the distinction in the 2021 Guide, it is estimated that 20 restaurants have lost their Bib Gourmand in the 2022 Guide. However, when approached by BigHospitality Michelin declined to comment.
