Chef Tom Shepherd will open his debut restaurant in Lichfield next month.

Upstairs by Tom Shepherd will be located on the first-floor restaurant above his father’s jewellery shop in the Staffordshire city.

The 28-cover restaurant will showcase Shepherd’s modern British cooking using seasonal ingredients and with subtle influences from Japan and east Asia. It will serve a five-course tasting menu priced at £62 and a seven-course menu for £77 as well as a three-course lunch menu, available from Thursday to Saturday priced at £35.

Dishes will include Orkney scallop with dashi, celeriac and apple; poached Atlantic cod with wild mussel, caviar and champagne; and Creedy Carver chicken with sweetcorn, Israeli couscous and leek.

A Sunday lunch menu will feature Shepherd’s take on classic British comfort food, such as roast salt aged Herefordshire beef sirloin; king oyster mushroom wellington with winter truffle.

The restaurant, which is due to open on 8 October, will have a bar area and central chef’s table with a roof terrace planned for early 2022.

Shepherd has worked at The Latymer with Michael Wignall and at Restaurant Sat Bains as development chef and most recently worked alongside Adam Stokes at his Adam’s restaurant in Birmingham, where he was there for two and a half years.

He left Adam’s in 2019 and ran meal kit service Dine at Home with Tom Shepherd during lockdown.
