McDonald's has become the latest high-profile restaurant chain to be hit with supply chain issues, with the fast food giant forced to pull milkshakes and bottled drinks from its menu.

In a statement, McDonald's said that bottled drinks and milkshakes would temporarily be unavailable at all of its stores across the country.

"Like most retailers, we are currently experiencing some supply chain issues, impacting the availability of a small number of products," the company said.

"Bottled drinks and milkshakes are temporarily unavailable in restaurants across England, Scotland and Wales.

"We apologise for any inconvenience, and thank our customers for their continued patience. We are working hard to return these items to the menu as soon as possible."

The news comes amid warnings that hospitality businesses across the country are facing 'enormous challenges' with their supply chains.

Last week Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UKHospitality, said that around two-thirds of operators are saying certain goods are not arriving.

She told The Independent: “This has a knock-on impacting of reducing the menu they can offer customers and hitting sales."

Nando’s was recently forced to temporarily either close or reduce the hours at around 50 of its restaurants after deliveries of chicken were affected by a nationwide shortage of lorry drivers, with shortages of certain food items and packaging at KFC also hitting the headlines.

The most recent CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index reported that food and drink supply markets have been hit by widespread distribution problems and a spike in demand following the return of out-of-home eating and drinking.
