Famed curry house Gaylord to return as virtual brand
The food will be prepared at Pali Hill, the modern Indian restaurant that took over Gaylord’s Fitzrovia site last year.
The Mortimer Street restaurant opened in 1966 when there were only a handful of Indian restaurants in London, building a reputation for classic Indian dishes served in upmarket, comfortable surroundings.
Gaylord at Home's hot food delivery menu is based on that of Gaylord's but has been slimmed down considerably from over 80 to 25 options.
Nearly all the dishes are curry house favourites, include samosas; chicken tikkas; lamb seekh kebab; Goan prawn curry; lamb rogan josh; and butter chicken.
The food will be prepared by a separate team overseen by former Gaylord general manager Sameer Berry.
"The smell of the familiar spices, the food we loved serving - has evoked so many great memories and stories of my time there," he says.
"I can’t wait for old fans to reconnect and new diners to discover our dishes and see why it ignited London’s obsession with some of India’s most loved dishes over 50 years ago."
“Part of the Mortimer Street site appeal when we were looking for somewhere to open Pali Hill was this rich history of celebrating India’s most beloved favourites,” adds Rahul Khanna of Pali Hill’s India-based owner Azure Hospitality.
“To have the chance to help resurrect one of the original ambassadors of our country’s cuisine and bring some of their dishes back to life has been extraordinary."
Billed as an ‘eclectic’ addition to London’s Indian restaurant scene, Pali Hill's kitchen is led by former The River Café chef Avinash Shashidhara.
The contemporary menu makes use of high quality British ingredients and aims to reflect India’s diverse food culture.
