Scottish chef Mark Greenaway is to open a takeaway pie and mash shop in London's Charing Cross next month.

Called Greenaway’s Pie & Mash, the concept is inspired by the capital's 'dwindling' pie shop tradition.

Scotch pastry shells will be used for the pie bases, and be topped with flaky puff pastry.

Fillings will include classics such as chicken, mushroom and tarragon; and beef short rib with pearl onions.

There will also be a range of seasonal specials such as butternut squash, goat’s cheese and spinach; confit duck with lentil and orange; and braised lamb shank with peas and mint.

As well as takeaway, the pie shop will offer delivery via Deliveroo. A range of frozen, cook-at-home pies will also be available for delivery.

It comes as the chef, who runs Grazing by Mark Greenaway at Edinburgh’s Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, prepares to open a fine dining restaurant in the capital later this year.

“Opening a pie and mash shop is not something I would have thought about doing a year ago," says Greenaway.

"However, living and learning the culture here in London during lockdown has pivoted my thinking and almost excited me to look for other opportunities ahead of my signature restaurant opening in the summer.“

The as yet unnamed fine-dining restaurant will have 30 covers and is expected to have a tasting menu-only offer that features some of Greenaway’s signature dishes from when he owned Restaurant Mark Greenaway in Edinburgh, which closed in 2018.
