More than eight in 10 consumers (85%) will order delivery more often or the same as they did before the pandemic, according to new Deliveroo report,

The data, published as part of Deliveroo’s Share of Stomach report, shows that many people have turned to food delivery for the first time during the pandemic, with nearly 20% of respondents ordering for the first time in December 2020.

It finds that 65% are spending more on delivery food as 'something to look forward to' during the pandemic.

Nearly half are ordering more often during the pandemic because they crave for a certain cuisine.

Customers are also looking to recreate their favourite meals at home, with 15% having ordered a meal kit from a restaurant in the past month

The 'morning after the night before' meal has taken a back seat during the pandemic, with ordering food because of a hangover 52% lower than before the pandemic.

Vegan orders, meanwhile, have soared.

In 2020 orders of plant-based dishes shot up 163%, while healthy grocery orders, such as eggs, avocado, semi-skimmed milk and lettuce, have consistently remained the top orders from grocery partners during the pandemic.

Deliveroo’s Share of Stomach report is aimed at helping restaurants understand how to adapt their business to meet the growing demand for food delivery, and looks into changing consumer tastes in 2020 to help restaurants reach new customers.

Overall, the top cuisine choices in the past year were American (pizza and burgers), Italian, Japanese, Indian and Thai.

Carlo Mocci, chief business officer UKI said: “Food delivery has been vital for restaurants across the country, helping them boost their revenue whilst being closed to dine-in guests.

“With customers set to grow their appetite for ordering food online, this new report aims to help restaurants maximise sales through delivery.”
