Organisers say social media has been flooded with support for the #PubsMatter campaign, with pub-goers sharing testimonials and writing to their MPs.
The hashtag has been coined by the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), along with the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and industry partners including the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
In what should be the industry’s busiest time of year, many pubs currently face strict restrictions and many more anticipate potential closure after Wednesday’s announcement, the campaign says.
The BII has stressed the importance of pubs as a community hub, combating loneliness and isolation by providing a space for regulars.
In the run up to Christmas, over 85% of British people said the pub is an important part of their Christmas celebrations.
David Davies, a pub goer from West Lancashire, says pubs offer people a chance to see old friends, exchange memories, re-tell old stories and shed tears. “Without the local pub, these long-lasting friendships would never have been forged,” he continues.
"Despite the fact that many publicans have spent thousands ensuring their pubs are COVID-19-secure, hundreds are still unable to reopen under the current guidelines,” says a spokesperson for the campaign.
"This is not only hurting local businesses, but also the wellbeing of the people using them. Pubs need fair treatment and better financial support to get through the festive period.”
