US pizza chain Sbarro has set out plans to potentially open a number of sites across the country having recently established its first UK location.

In partnership with petrol station and fast-food operator EG Group, Sbarro has opened its first UK restaurant in Birmingham and says it has plans to open a further five trial sites across the country this year.

Should those sites prove successful, the chain will look to open further sites in 20201 under its partnership with EG Group.

“It’s a natural fit between the two brands,” says Sbarro chief executive David Karam.

“As the trend continues to shift towards freshly prepared and higher-quality food offerings in the convenience store segment, Sbarro is an ideal partner for a great brand like EG Group.”

Sbarro, which specialises in New York-style pizza by the slice, opened its restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, back in 1956.

The business has since grown into a major franchise operation, and now has 630 sites across 24 countries.

“We are excited to partner with Sbarro, a world-renowned pizza brand present in 24 countries that offers excellent choices to diners,” says Mohammad Tayab, EG Group food and beverage director for Europe.

“Its focus on serving authentic New York-style pizza using the freshest ingredients will be a treat to customers looking for a fresh, tasty and convenient offering at one of our locations.”
