Almost 800 pubs and 12 wine bars in Nottingham will be forced to close unless they can operate as restaurants serving substantial meals when Nottinghamshire moves into Tier 3 lockdown on Friday.

The Government is set to announce that the whole of Nottinghamshire will go into Tier 3 lockdown on Friday, with Nottingham City, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe council areas having already been preparing to enter Tier 3 restrictions at midnight tonight (28 October).

Instead, the entire county will now go into the highest lockdown measures in England together on Friday (30 October) at 12.01am.

The restrictions could potentially impact 784 pubs and 12 wine bars, according to real estate advisor Altus Group.

Under Tier 3 restrictions the majority of wet-led pubs and bars will be forced to close with social mixing between households banned both indoors and outdoors.

Restaurant and food-led pubs or bars that are able to ‘operate as if they were a restaurant’ and serve ‘substantial’ meals will be able to continue to trade.

Posting on Twitter, Nottingham South Labour MP Lilian Greenwood said she wasn’t convinced sectors affected by the Tier 3 restrictions would get the relevant support from the Government.

“Unfortunately I fear this Government won’t do what’s needed on financial support or test and trace, but we have to hope the Tier 3 restrictions work at getting the virus under control,” she said.

“Otherwise we’ll all suffer and still end up with a further lockdown.”

The new ruling from the Government means that Nottinghamshire will join the Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Warrington and South Yorkshire in Tier 3.
