Shield Safety Group launches Safe to Trade accreditation scheme
Shield Safety Group has launched an accreditation scheme designed to enable businesses to reopen safely with ongoing COVID-19 checks and monitoring.

The Safe to Trade scheme covers all aspects of restaurant operations, including front and back of house, how the flow of customers is managed as they move through the premises and cleaning regimes.

Shield Safety Group monitors the effectiveness of implementation via remote risk assessment data-capture, remote audits, physical audits and - crucially - by encouraging both customer and staff to scan window sticker and tent card QR codes to submit feedback.

“As a consumer if you see something that concerns you, simply scan the QR codes, search for the business and provide your rating and feedback. This anonymous feedback will be passed onto the business to aid in their continual safety performance,” says Shield Safety Group founder Mark Flanagan.

“It is through this reporting system that we hope to ensure protection for everyone, and give a much-needed boost for those that are desperate to reopen safely.”

Managed via software that reports back to Shield Safety Group in real time, key checks include that an initial COVID-19 risk assessment been completed and results shared with employees; checking social distancing in place across the business including signage, floor markings, floor layout and entrance/exit rules; and ensuring the cleaning schedule has been updated to account for COVID-19 controls and changes in cleaning frequency and chemicals used.

Flanagan says the scheme is spearheaded by a governance board of industry experts with experience across public and private sector food safety and health and safety and will increase consumer confidence as people return to bars and restaurants.

“Since putting the Safe to Trade Scheme live, we have seen a huge interest from new and existing customers, and it’s great to see the enthusiasm across the industry for the scheme,” he says.
