The HMRC has confirmed that the portal for making claims under the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (JRS) will open on 20 April.

The scheme, which was announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak last month, allows employers to claim 80% monthly wages up to £2,500 for furloughed employees unable to work as a result of the Coronavirus crisis.

Employers must be enrolled for PAYE online to make a claim, which can be backdated to the beginning of March.

Yesterday (8 April) the BBC reported that more than nine million workers are expected to be furloughed under the JRS.

The Resolution Foundation think tank calculated the number using the latest figures on take-up of the scheme from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

Fresh figures from the BCC reportedly suggest nearly a fifth of smaller firms plan to furlough all their staff.

In order to help hospitality workers estimate what their earnings will be under the JRS, tip solutions business TiPJAR and software company Rotaready have joined forces to launch a furlough calculator.

The calculator, which is accessible for free through TiPJAR’s website, is able to gauge how much workers will receive while on furlough through a series of questions.
