The calculator, which is accessible for free through TiPJAR’s website, is able to gauge how much workers will receive while on furlough through a series of questions.
For those who receive an annual salary, it will calculate 80% based on details provided, showing the user what they’re entitled to both before and after tax.
Those whose pay is more varied will be asked a series of questions, including how often they’re paid and whether they have figures for gross or net pay, to help the calculator estimate how much they will receive.
Under the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, employers are able to claim a grant from HMRC to cover 80% of employees wages up to £2,500 per month.
A disclaimer attached to the calculator reads: "Although it is widely understood that tronc will be included, this has not been guaranteed by the Government yet, as of 7 April 2020."
There remains plenty of confusion within the hospitality industry as to whether tronc payments can be included by employers when calculating employees wages.
While the Government guidance doesn’t address the matter directly, its most recent update does stipulate that workers will not be entitled to tip payments while they are furloughed.
A spokesperson for HMRC, however, has told BigHospitality that tronc, as a method of paying tips, isn’t eligible under the scheme.
