The chef and restaurateur passed away surrounded by family at his home in Bray, Berkshire following an illness.
Social media has been flooded with memories and praise for the late chef.
Fred Sirieix, who previously worked front of house at Roux’s restaurant Le Gavroche, tweeted: “RIP #MichelRoux You and your brother Albert changed the face of gastronomy, eating out and the world of restaurants in the UK. Every professional in this country are a proud descendant of your heritage. We owe you. Thank you #legend”
Chef James Martin, who was joined by Roux for the 100th episode of his ITV show in February, said: ”Broken and so sad to let you know we have lost a legend and me a friend...words cannot describe what this man did for me in my life...he taught, he listened, he advised and he strengthened every part of what I do...Michel I love you, always have and always will...”
The official Michelin Guide account praised the chef as a ‘true titan of the hospitality industry’.
@MichelinGuideUK tweeted: “He inspired a whole generation of chefs and the UK restaurant scene would not be what is is today were it not for his influence.
"Our thoughts are with his family and the many who worked with this legendary chef.”
Chef Paul Heathcote wrote: "So very sad hearing the news that one of of our industry's true inspirational legends has passed away.
"Michel Roux was a catalyst and standard bearer for so many that fly the gastronomic flag today. My thoughts are with the Roux family #RIPMichelRoux"
