Mowgli set for first Scottish opening
Announcing the news on Twitter last night, founder Nisha Katona said: “BIG NEWS – Mowgli Edinburgh is happening! We are utterly thrilled to moving to Hanover Street just off Princes Street with an aim to open this Winter. Five years ago, when I started Mowgli, if you told me I’d be opening in this city of cities I would have checked your clootie dumpling.”
Katona, a former barrister, launched Mowgli in Liverpool in 2014.
It currently operates 10 restaurants across the country in cities including Manchester, Cardiff and Birmingham.
Two further sites are slated to launch in the first half of 2020, in Bristol and Leeds respectively.
Speaking in December, Katona said the group was also considering opening restaurants in Newcastle, Preston, Bath, Brighton and Coventry.
“Despite the uncertainty in the wider economy, I have never been more passionate, and positive for the future,” she said.
Mowgli has been on the expansion trail since securing a £3.45m backing from private equity company Foresight Group in 2017.
So far, the company’s growth plans haven’t included the capital, although Katona has said she hasn’t completely ruled out a move into London at some point.
“As a former lawyer I handle all the lease negotiations on our sites and I will never do something that is too risky or onerous financially, which is part of the reason we have not yet gone to London, but I am always on the lookout for the right site at the right price.”
