MasterChef winner and Nanban founder Tim Anderson is to launch a katsu sando concept in partnership with delivery-only kitchen business Taster.

Stacksando is one of three brands to be introduced by Taster this month, the other two being Thai street food outfit Take-Out-Thai, created in collaboration with former Som Saa chef John Chantarasak; and plant-based burger concept A Burgers.

Taster, which was founded by former Deliveroo executive Anton Soulier in 2017, promotes itself as offering “restaurant-quality meals” delivered directly to the consumer through third-party online food distribution platforms.

It currently operates two UK ‘dark’ kitchens in London and Brighton respectively, with 10 others located across France and Spain.

“Taster makes some of the best food for delivery out there, because it’s made with delivery in mind,” says Anderson.

“For Stacksando I wanted to create a small menu of dishes that travel well and taste fantastic, and of course there’s almost no better item in Japanese gastronomy to tick those boxes than the great katsu sando.”

The Stacksando menu will feature ‘a rolling selection of three different sandos’, all served on Japanese milk bread.

They include a tonkotsu option with deep-fried pork loin topped with tonkotsu sauce, umami mustard mayonnaise and hispi cabbage; and a chicken katsu curry sando with panko-coated chicken breast, Japanese curry mayonnaise, pickled ginger and gem lettuce.

The katsu sando has become an Insta-phenomenon, particularly in London, thanks in part to Arcade Food Theatre operator TÓU, which is owned by TĀTĀ Eatery founders Ana Gonçalves and Zijun Meng.

Sandos also feature heavily on the menu Yatai, the Japanese brand launched by former Restaurant Story head chef Angelo Sato at Market Halls’ new flagship food hall near Oxford Circus.

Meanwhile, Wagamama founder Alan Yau is teaming up with mozzarella bar Obicà to open a dedicated Italian-Japanese sando shop in South Kensington later this month.
