Greggs is set to expand its delivery presence across the UK by the end of the year.

City AM reports that the high street bakery chain trialled delivery in several cities last year, and is now preparing to roll out the service nationwide.

Greggs is yet to announce which delivery platform it will partner with, but both Deliveroo and Just Eat are said to be in contention.

“What we have been doing for more than a year is trialling in different places and different partners, and we have learned enough to decide that we are interested in rolling out across the country,” said Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside to City AM.

The announcement follows news that Greggs would make a one-off £7m bonus payment to employees in recognition of an “exceptional year”, which saw the launch of its vegan sausage roll boost profit.

In its fourth quarter trading update, the business reported like for like sales growth of 9.2%.

Total sales were up 13.5%, with 138 new shops opening in 2019, and 41 closures.

Full year profit before tax is expected to be “slightly higher” than previous expectations, when full year results are reported in March 2020.

According to BigHospitality’s sister site, MCA, Greggs is also looking to roll out customisation order screens following a positive trial in its first ‘Greggs of the future’ pilot store.

The store, which launched in Coatbridge near Glasgow last November, is being used to trial various prospective elements.

Customers can personalise pizzas and sandwiches from touch-screen displays and collect coffee from a self-service machine.

As of 28 December 2019, Greggs operated 2050 locations, with around 100 more expected to open in the year ahead.
