Deliveroo is to open a flagship headquarters in Edinburgh this year, which it says will create 70 high-skilled jobs.

The team will work on tools to support its delivery riders, restaurants and customers when the site opens in April.

It comes after Deliveroo acquired Scottish software design and development firm Cultivate in August 2019.

The delivery company says it is looking to develop its payment systems and new features ‘to help restaurant partners run and grow their business’, including technology to help with financial planning.

“This is the company’s first UK tech office outside of London and reflects the strength of the tech sector and the scale of our ambition for Edinburgh,” says Dan Winn, Deliveroo VP of engineering.

“These new products will improve rider experience and help restaurants grow their businesses, with a particular focus on small businesses.”

Deliveroo was backed by Amazon last May, though the investment is currently under investigation by the Competitions and Markets Authority over concerns it could be anti-competitive and discourage Amazon from relaunching its own restaurant delivery service in the UK.

Deliveroo was founded in London by Will Shu and Greg Orlowski in 2013.

It now operates in over 500 towns and cities across 13 markets including Australia, Singapore and Kuwait.
