Chef Ian Pengelley to oversee competitive socialising concept Birdies street food menu
Former Gilgamesh chef Ian Pengelley is to oversee the menu for a competitive socialising concept set to launch at Battersea Power Station next week.

The latest venture from the team behind Stratford’s SFG Club, Birdies will combine crazy golf with cocktails and street food.

It will feature a ‘surreal’ nine-hole course, with each individual hole ‘designed to derail the senses and challenge speed, accuracy and determination’.

Pengelley has worked on the food offering alongside head chef Andrew Weatherley, with the menu designed to combine culinary influences from Asia and Latin America.

Dishes will include octopus dumplings with Japanese mayonnaise, ‘signature’ sauce and pickled ginger; spicy cactus with sweetcorn, ginger, edamame, coconut feta and toasted fennel; and chicken thigh with bell peppers, anticucho sauce and salsa en polvo.

“Birdies will offer visitors a level of escapism from everyday life and is an exciting way to experience the growing trend of competitive socialising,” says founder Gerry Cottle Jnr.

“Londoners want a full and memorable experience to share with their friends when they socialise in real life and online, it’s no longer just about grabbing a quick pint in your local.”

The Birdies concept shares similarities with mini golf and restaurant concept Puttshack, which is set to open its third UK site in Bank this Friday (22 November), with a fourth planned for the Intu Watford shopping centre next year.

Other competitive socialising concepts include darts chain Flight Club and shuffleboard brand Electric Shuffle, the latter of which is set to open its first location in Canary Wharf’s Cabot Square later this month.
