A restaurant focused on ‘the bold and unapologetic flavours of Sri Lankan home-cooking’ is to open in Soho this autumn.

Kolamba, which translates as ‘Colombo’ in Sinhalese, will serve a range of classic Sri Lankan dishes prepared in a contemporary manner.

Owners Eroshan and Aushi Meewella, who both grew up in the Sri Lankan capital, have drawn on the food of their childhood to ‘showcase the abundant flavours and colours inherent to (Sri Lanka’s] vibrant cuisine’.

The menu will feature a range of small and large sharing plates with many of the dishes containing coconut, which is ubiquitous in Sri Lankan cooking.

Options will include a kalu pol pork curry; southern black pepper prawn fry; and ala thel dala, a Sri Lankan staple that consists of spiced potatoes softened and fried with onions and chilli.

Side dishes will include a selection of sambols (fresh salads of local vegetables) including one with caramelised onion and curry leaves, finished with a dash of chilli; pol roti coconut flatbreads with diced onion and green chilli; and hoppers (a bowl-shaped pancake).

Drinks will feature a range of Sri Lankan alcohol brands including Lion Lager, Colombo 7 Gin and Rockland Ceylon Arrack.

The interior is a design collaboration between Studio Fils and Whitebox London with an emphasis on organic, earthy tones, and will have 56 covers with seating for a further six available outside.
