Deliveroo is teaming up with Sainsbury’s to deliver hot pizza from its supermarket counters.

The two-month trial launched in five stores in Cambridge, Selly Oak, West Hove, Pimlico and Hornsey yesterday (22 July).

Customers can order nearly 50 Sainsbury’s products for home delivery including £6 Margherita, Meat Feast and Pepperoni sourdough pizzas, a bag of salad (£1.25), dips, sweets and crisps.

It is the first time a UK supermarket has offered hot takeaways through Deliveroo.

Extra staff will help man Sainsbury's hot food counters, which will be staying open later to meet orders.

“We’re excited to see what our customers think before deciding if, how and where we go next with the offer,” says Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s group chief digital officer.

The UK’s food delivery market is already worth £8.1bn and is expected to grow to £9.8bn by 2021, according to the MCA Foodservice Delivery report 2018.

Deliveroo says working with the supermarket will allow it to “bring even more choice to customers around the UK”.

The partnership is the latest move from Deliveroo as it looks to diversify its platform. Last week the company announced it was launching a ‘Food Procurement’ service that it claimed would save restaurants ‘up to 40%’ on product and ingredient costs.

Tech giant Amazon led a £450m funding round in Deliveroo in May, but its investment has been paused while it is investigated by the UK’s competition watchdog.

The group’s San Francisco-based rival Uber is reportedly also developing a grocery delivery business alongside its UberEats restaurant ordering platform.
