Operated by food travel operator SSP, the new deli is Oliver’s first concept to open in the international Spanish airport and will serve a variety of sandwiches, artisan pizza, salads and pastries.
Last month saw the immediate closure of all 22 high-street restaurants operated by Oliver’s UK group after the company fell into administration, resulting in approximately 1,000 redundancies.
Oliver’s three Gatwick Airport locations - Jamie’s Italian, Jamie’s Italian Coffee Lounge and Jamie Oliver’s Diner – continue to trade for the moment while administrators KPMG explore options for the sites.
The chef's company began working with SSP in 2015 and has since launched restaurants in airport locations across Europe including Dusseldorf, Vienna and Oslo.
In June last year Jamie’s Deli opened its first location in Bahrain again in partnership with SSP, and in May this year – little more than a week before the downfall of Oliver’s restaurant empire in the UK – another site was opened in Helsinki Airport.
Oliver's international restaurants – as well as Fifteen Cornwall, which operates under franchise – continue to trade as normal and are not affected by the administration.
Jamie’s Deli opened in Malaga Costa del Sol International Airport alongside five other new SSP units, including two Starbucks cafés and a Burger King.
