Sorry, just setting the scene. No, he’s not, but a hotel in Dubai is launching a new concept based on the beloved reality cooking show that – on these shores at least – is presented by self-appointed dessert specialist Wallace and Australian chef John Torode. It’s a project that has apparently been in development for many years, and promises to offer guests something that is “unique and wonderful”.
Oh yes, I know MasterChef. Isn’t it presented by the guy who makes all those pasta sauces?
You’re thinking of Loyd Grossman, who appeared on the show when it first aired on the BBC in the 90s. Back in 2005, however, it was rebranded and has since gone on to become a global TV phenomenon that is produced in more than 60 territories under a franchise deal.
This is something for the fans then?
Yes. In fact, those who don’t like the show should give it a wide berth. Visitors to the restaurant will instantly feel like they are in familiar surroundings, with the “industrial interior” inspired by the recognisable TV set design and coming complete with a “dedicated” bar.
What’s on the menu?
We do not have specifics, but we’re told the restaurant will feature a menu of original dishes conceived by global MasterChef champions and finalists, with Margarita Vaamonde-Beggs – the former executive sous chef of Hollywood celeb hotspot Catch LA – heading up the kitchen. Rumour has it there will also be a Mystery Box option, where diners can select five to seven ingredients from a pool of 18 seasonal choices and have them cooked on-demand then and there.
Sounds fun, but Dubai is a little out of my way. Are there any TV-themed dining experiences closer to home?
Certainly. If you’re a fan of US sitcom Friends then you’ll be able to grab a coffee in Central Perk in either Manchester, Bristol, Milton Keynes or London when The Luna Cinema take the set on tour again this summer. And for those who fancy themselves as something of a Walter White figure, there is a Breaking Bad cocktail bar on Bohemia Place in London.

Well then don’t forget about the ‘immersive spoof dining experience’ based on the show that is to open in Waterloo next month to coincide with the launch of the final series. It sounds like a lot of fun, but make sure you duck for cover if the band start playing The Rains of Castamere.
