Great Scotland Yard Hotel to open after £75m revamp
The Whitehall site has undergone a £75m, three-and-a-half-year revamp by developers Galliard Group to transform it in to the 153-room Great Scotland Yard Hotel.
The seven-storey project is backed by Abu Dhabi-based conglomerate Lulu Group International, which bought the site for £110m in 2016.
The hotel’s flagship restaurant will be overseen by chef Gill, who is behind Clapham restaurants The Dairy, Sorella and Counter Culture. He will also launch Irish-influenced restaurant Darby’s at the Embassy Gardens development this year.
Though further details of the menu are yet to be confirmed, the restaurant’s design is described as being inspired by “industrial warehouse architecture with oak timber flooring, ceramic wall tiling, exposed brick walls and vaulted ceilings”.
The hotel will also feature a cocktail bar with a glass dome, and a whiskey bar and clubroom behind hidden doors.
“Our vision was to deliver a world-class hotel of the quality of The Mercer or the Chateau Marmont, a place renowned for exceptional service, destination dining and leisure and outstanding luxury and quality,” says Don O’Sullivan, chief executive of Galliard Group.
The Scotland Yard building was constructed in 1910 and also served as the Royal Military Police headquarters and the British Army Recruitment Office. It later became the Ministry of Defence Library, until 2004.
