Brixton Village launches restaurant incubator with London chefs
The competition, which will be categorised into ‘Amateur’ and ‘Experienced’, is calling on home cooks, street food stalls, supper clubs, food start-ups and entrepreneurs to come up with a food concept to take up a six-month residency at Brixton Village.
The panel of judges will include chef Jackson Boxer of Brunswick House and St. Leonard’s fame, James Cochran, recently crowned ‘Champion of Champions’ on BBC Two’s Great British Menu, and baker and author Claire Ptak, who created the Royal Wedding cake for Harry and Meghan Markle.
Shortlisted finalists will make a live pitch in Brixton Village where the panel will sample their food concepts.
Two winners will launch a residency at the scheme and receive mentorship from a team of experts including food journalist Charles Nyereyegona and Shakya Manage, founder of Sri Lankan Supper Club.
“Brixton has a long history of entrepreneurship we are keen to reflect this in our custodianship of the market,” says Alistair Maddox, director of Brixton Village & Market Row at Hondo Enterprises.
“By investing in local innovation we’re hoping to realise our vision for Brixton Village as a cultural and creative space where existing traders thrive, new traders can be established and locals and visitors can continuously discover new experiences and homegrown talent.”
James Cochran, co-founder and head chef of 1251, says: “Brixton continues to be such a melting pot for world cuisines, and I am looking forward to mentoring the next generation of young vibrant chefs here.”
