The former head chef of Nathan Outlaw’s two-Michelin star flagship in Port Isaac took over from Michael Wignall in early January 2018.
Wignall had managed to retain the Chagford hotel’s two Michelin star rating but under Simpson’s tenure the venue dropped down to one star.
“Guests, the Brownsword family and our whole company have delighted in the dishes and food style that Chris brought to Gidleigh Park,” says a spokesperson for owner Brownsword Hotels.
“As his first lead chef role, we understand that the challenges and demands of the multiple outlets in a hotel kitchen versus a single restaurant operation aren’t for everyone and fully support his decision to take some time out."
“It has been a huge honour to head up the kitchen at Gidleigh Park and I couldn’t be prouder of our achievement of winning a Michelin star – testament to the team I’ve had around me,” says Simpson.
“I would like to thank the Brownsword group for giving me this opportunity and for their support and encouragement. I wish everyone at Gidleigh Park the very best in the future – it is a truly special place."
A replacement is expected to be announced shortly.
Gidleigh Park is one of the country’s most prominent country house hotels and has been overseen by a number of high profile chefs, most notably Michael Caines, who held two stars there for 17 years.
