Vegan Indian street food vendor SpiceBox is to open its first permanent location, in London’s Walthamstow, next year.

The restaurant, that will serve meat-free versions of Indian classics, will open on 29 January on Hoe Street.

SpiceBox, which is run by Grace Regan, has previously traded on the street food circuit with KERB.

The menu promises to be modern Indian with plenty of nods to the iconic British curry house, featuring classic dishes reimagined with a plant-based spin.

Mains will include ‘chickn tikka massala’, the creamy curry house classic with tandoori chicken substitute pieces and crunchy green peppers; jackfruit jalfrezi; and brinjal bhaji. Sides will include its signature tarka dhal, which was voted ‘Best Dahl in Britain’ at The British Dahl Festival 2018.

It will also have a ‘street bites’ section on the menu, as a nod towards the brand’s street food roots. Small plates will include loaded onion bhaji with pickled onions, green chilli, date and tamarind chutney; pani puri, puffed puris filled with chickpeas, and topped with sev, chutney and kachumber salad; and potato and pea samosa with house-made cucumber and mint raita.

The 30-cover restaurant will take inspiration from Indian design and British curry house and will offer takeaway, with plans to launch an in-house delivery service in March next year.

SpiceBox is also aiming to run the UK’s first zero waste Indian takeaway and delivery scheme. Reusable tiffin boxes will be sent out with each customer’s first order and then will be refilled by SpiceBox each time an order is placed.
