South London Thai restaurant The Begging Bowl will launch a Kickstarter campaign next month to finance the renovation of its kitchen and to launch a new bar.

The restaurant, which opened on Peckham's Bellenden Road six years ago, will launch the campaign on 8 October, aiming to raise £50,000.

Founder Jane Alty will offer a selection of rewards in return for pledges, including exclusive Thai takeaways; supperclubs; cookery classes; and one-off chef dinners.

The money raised will be used to renovate the kitchen, which has not been refurbished since the restaurant launched; and to create a new cocktail bar.

The funds will also go towards the purchase of new furniture, as the restaurant is known to have small tables which were described as “child’s school desks” by Grace Dent in her glowing 2012 review of the restaurant.

If successful, the restaurant will be launching a new menu of cocktails and bar snacks for customers to either eat while waiting for a table, or to have as a snack without staying for a full meal.

Founder Jane Alty takes her experience from working at the likes of Bibendum; Racine; Galvin at Windows; and Nahm with David Thompson. She is respected as a major player on the Thai food scene in the capital.

Since she launched the restaurant six years ago it has gained a reputation for being a stalwart on the London Thai food scene, and describes itself as “an original Thai concept restaurant set in the heart of Peckham”.

It uses specialist ingredients such as hog plum; perilla; Thai holy basil and banana blossom, sourced from unique UK growers as well as respected Thai suppliers.
