Pret A Manger is to open its first vegetarian-only store in Manchester next month.

The site, the first Veggie Pret outside London, will launch in the city’s Deansgate area.

There are currently three Veggie Pret’s trading in the capital following the success of its first Soho pop-up in 2016.

Pret says it has received “hundreds” of messages on social media asking it to open vegetarian stores in more cities.

The Manchester site will serve a new menu combining “veggie classics” with new dishes such as butternut and cauliflower gratin; and a spicy halloumi and pepper baguette.

“When we asked customers on social media where they’d like to see the next Veggie Pret, Manchester was the top request,” says Hannah Dolan, head of food development at Pret.

“Veggie Pret is still growing and the future is looking as green as ever. We want customers to keep telling us what they think – and where they’d like to see Veggie Pret next.”

The success of the concept has also inspired the coffee chain to launch more vegetarian and vegan dishes across its 500+ stores.

Pret says more than half of its sandwiches and salads were vegetarian and vegan in 2017, while its vegan sweet products are some of its bestselling items.

The chain was sold to Krispy Kreme owner JAB for a reported £1.5bn earlier this year.
